Should Our Servitude Be Selective?

"Should our servitude be selective?"
By that, I mean when the word of God clearly instructed us over and over again did that mean we can thoughtlessly pick and choose when we want to be generous and when we want to be selfish? I attended a blood drive recently and heard accounts of several "Christians" speak of how... they "just don't do that."

What exactly does that mean?

I understand if you have a medical condition or if you've been out of the country and they won't let you, but are there really any justifiable, BIBLICAL reasons? Of course not! We must learn to serve all in every way we can.

They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.
Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” (Mark 9:33b-35)
If someone was passing around a bucket for money for a child with cancer, we would look at our brother/sister in Christ like they were crazy if they said "I have it, but I just don't do that." If you're a mechanic, with ample time on your hands and the means to change a tire and you see someone with a flat after class, would you really just say "I have all of the tools, but I just don't do that"?

Now, I am far from perfect and my level of servitude could definitely use an upgrade. So don't think I'm just tossing out fire and brimstone; this is also a "self check". Many chances have passed me by in my life where I could have served my brother or sister, and in return I would have be serving the God I so truly adore. But that's the beauty of the God we serve; He's a God of second chances! No single scripture says those exact words, but the Bible is filled with accounts of God watching us turn away from Him, or love Him half-heartedly and still come to our rescue when we are in need. He is patient with us and smiles when we stop, reevaluate our lives and serve others.

Now, this does not always mean we are serving financially. I know I mentioned in my last blogs ways to give up that extra dough we may be spending selfishly, but there are so many instances when what our brother or sister in Christ really needs isn't $$$, but instead they need some good Biblical advice, or someone to hold their hand through a tough time. There may be someone on the side of the road who is cold, and even though you may not have somewhere for them to lay their head that night (because where you lay your own head may be someone else's home) you might decide to stop and give them your coat. You might buy two grilled chicken salads at lunch instead of one and give one to the intern you know is scraping coins just to buy that double cheeseburger. You hook up with your local Habitat for Humanity chapter a become part of someone's dream of having their own home. You can serve with simply the love in your heart and your time.

In Galatians 5, Paul reminds us "You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other."

He reminds us that Jesus said love your neighbor as yourself. Those words are so powerful. If you were dying from a rare blood disease but had the power to put new, clean, healthy blood in yourself would you simply choose not to? If your own son was injured in a car accident and loosing blood quickly, only for the nurse to come in and say "We're out of O negative", how would that make you feel?

When it all comes down to it, God is not concerned about our fear of needles, or discomfort with blood, or preference to buy yet another $5 cupcake or $6 cup of coffee instead of giving it to a worthy cause. He is not concerned with our fears because they are a direct disobedience of His command to fear Him only. Not in worry, but in reverence.
We have to stop letting fear stop us from giving all we can, and stop allowing ourselves to get sucked into the self-centered mentality of our culture. But instead remember Who we belong to and what He has called us to do.

Give It Up!

So, I am definitely one of those people who is almost bawling in tears on my couch after watching one of those informationals on poverty stricken areas. I get sad when I see a stray dog, starving on the side of the road, seeing children with cancer struggle with losing their hair during chemo makes me want to pull a Britney Spears in my bathroom every now and then in hopes of making them feel better [hey, I did my big chop when I was going natural...not a big difference :-)].

Needless to say, I am a charity kind of woman who loves to volunteer...as we all should be.

Proverbs 3:27-29 tells us: "Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, “Come back later; I’ll give it tomorrow”— when you now have it with you (NIV84)." And in Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus clearly instructs: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

We cannot hold on to the blessings God has given us by selfishly keeping them from sacrificially serving His kingdom. If I die as soon as I publish this post, I don't want to have to open my eyes on the day of judgement and find myself trying to explain why my bank account was flourishing while my sister was hungry.

I often run across people who say they are interested in giving to charities and volunteering, but do not really know which ones to get involved with. Personally, I say it depends on whichever one seems to be pulling at your heart the most. Before getting heavily involved with anything, I am a firm believer that spending some quality time seeking guidance from our Heavenly Father is a must. He has softened my heart towards the plight of our youth, and I believe that is why most of the non-profit organizations I am involved with are primarily geared towards children and teenagers.

In this blog post, I really just wanted to share a few of the non-profit organizations that are closest to my heart. Hopefully, they will be a good starting point for you...God bless!

1. Code BLUE Youth Mentoring
This non-profit may very well be the closest to my heart because it is the brain child of me and my eldest sister; it's my baby. We started the program in 2007 with only eight girls. To date, God has allowed us to provide mentorship for over fifty young ladies in the Mobile County Public School System.

We spend a lot of time teaching the girls the benefits of going to college and encourage them to take their academic careers very seriousl...y, even at such a young age. Assigned mentors are required to visit their mentee at school at least once a week, and are to call them regularly.

For more information on how you can help out, send an E-mail to CodeBlueMentoring@ymail.com or visit our Facebook page by clicking the progam title above!

2. Compassion International
This non-profit is fairly new in my life. When my husband and I first got engaged, he was sharing with me all of the charities he gives to on a regular basis. He let me know that he sponsors a child through Compassion International and needless to say, I feel even more in love with him at that very moment.

According to their Web site, "Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults. Founded by the Rev. Everett Swanson in 1952, Compassion began providing Korean War orphans with food, shelter, education and health care, as well as Christian training."

3. charity: water
I absolutely LOVE this charity! When I first heard about while I was still in undergrad, it opened my eyes to a growing problem in our world that I was not aware of. I mean, of course I knew getting clean water was an issue in some countries, but I had no idea of how many people were affected by it and I could not just stand by and watch after putting faces to the epidemic.

Through charity: water, each $20 general donation the organtion receives one person to receive access to a clean water project...$20! I used to spend that on a night at Liquid Sushi Lounge with my girlfriends, or on a handbag, or some scrapbooking supplies. How beautiful that that Lord can change our heart so that we begin to understand how He really wants us to be a blessing to others.

Click the link about to see how you can start making a difference through charity: water!

Again, I pray this short blog tugs on your heart and inspires you to give more (in anyway you can) to the children of God.

No Temporary Affair...Bound4LIFE!

God has given me the privilege of being surrounded by some truly amazing people. People who understand their lives are meant for a much greater purpose than simply fulfilling personal definition of success. They not only know Who created them, but they have silenced themselves to listen attentively at what our Creator has instructed them to do during the current season of their life.

Marquita Southall, 20-year-old pro-life activist, is one of those people.

In 2011, Southall answered God's call to take ownership of the abortion epidemic in the United States and became the leader of the Mobile Chapter of Bound4LIFE. She has given up the typical entertainments and recreational activities of the average college-age woman, and has instead decided to spend her time educating and mobilizing new activists. Through Silent Sieges, which are public events where activists wear "LIFE Tape" over their mouths while silently praying in front of courthouses and abortion facilities around the nation, and the distribution of LIFE Bands, the need for an increase in Faith in order to create an increase in pro-life legislation and personal decision making is growing.
Mobile Chapter of Bound4LIFE Leader Marquita Southall (right), and fellow
pro-life activist pray outside of Planned Parenthood in Mobile, AL.
Not only am I honored to know her, I am also honored to call her my friend.
I recently had time to probe Southall on exactly how she feels about abortion, her relationship with Christ and how it has affected her pro-life involvement, and get some more insight into Bound4LIFE.

Why is spreading this message so important to you?
The message of LIFE is very important to me. I remember lying in my room one night and the issue of abortion fell upon me like a ton of bricks. God basically swamped my soul with His heart for the unborn. Abortion is a topic most people are "too familiar" with. Countless amounts of people write papers and even give speeches about it in their class projects. To me, abortion is more than a topic, it is murder.
So I began to do my research on abortion and after finding out so many staggering statistics I felt as if I had to do something about it. There have been about 53 million abortions in America since 1973. That’s the population of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Texas combined. I don’t know about you, but they blew my mind!

The issue of abortion is so close to my heart because I could have had another sister, but my mom chose to terminate her life. My mom has five girls and every single time we gather together it feels like someone is missing. Immediately my mind floods back to the abortion my mom had before my youngest sister was born.  The cutoff date for abortion is 6 months and my mom actually gave birth to me at 5 months; I was born 1lb 3 oz. I always think to myself if I survived, every single baby that was killed at that stage could have survived as well. I was in the hospital for 3 months fighting for my life, and LIFE won. I believe every baby deserves to get a chance to live.

Have you heard any deeply moving stories about abortion since becoming active with Bound4Life?

I’ve actually heard quite a few stories that were very stirring. My best friend met a pregnant young lady at her job and she began to tell her about Bound4LIFE. The young lady began to tell my best friend about her LIFE experience. This young lady was about 7 months pregnant and just months before she had an appointment set up to abort her baby. She started to tell her experience…

When she was only a few months pregnant she went into the abortion clinic to have her baby removed. She frigidly waited her turn while many other young women were having abortions in the nearby room. The door opened and the doctor called her into the room to perform the procedure. She proceeded to the room and sat on the bed until the doctor returned. As she sat there ,she could hear an abortion being performed in the room next to her; you can actually hear the little feeble body being sucked out of his/her mother’s womb. At this point the young lady was very shaken up. So the doctor came back into the room asked her to remove her clothes and lay on the table. After doing so the doctor began fidgeting with her belly to find the baby. After minutes of searching, the baby was nowhere to be found. They both were stunned because the young lady knew for a fact that she was pregnant. So once again the doctor began to look for her baby; nothing. The doctor set up a separate appointment with an actual hospital to see if they could find the baby. The young lady agreed to the appointment and after hours with them, the baby was still undetectable. Time had passed and the young lady visited four different specialists and no one could find the baby. Following all of this confusion they concluded that the young lady was not pregnant, but that was not the case. Weeks passed and the young lady felt weird, come to find out the girl was pregnant all along, but the baby was hidden from any detections of life. Not one piece of all those doctors advanced equipment could find a trace of that baby’s life. When I heard the story I wept because I knew God hid her baby. At that point the young lady knew that her baby was destined to live. She recently gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and named him Jordan.

What is the most Spirit-stirring experience you have encountered since becoming active with Bound4Life?

Recently, one of my family members found out that they were pregnant. When she found out her first reaction was, “Hey I’m having an abortion” and she said it with no hint of budging. I literally cried and petitioned God. Here I am taking a stand for LIFE and someone so close to me is thinking about taking her baby’s life. So I began to intercede on behalf of that unborn child. I refused to even sleep! So after a couple of days in prayer I had a dream. In that dream my aunt and sister, who is also pregnant, were both sitting on two separate sofas across from each other. I walked into the area and sat on the side of my aunt and instantly my dream transformed into a vision, and in that vision my aunt’s stomach literally opened up. When her stomach opened a little girl about the age of 3 jumped out and grabbed my neck. She grabbed my face, looked me in my eyes and said “Thank you for saving me”. I awoke at once completely overtaken by the presence of God. All I could do is weep and pray harder. I kept saying and proclaiming “This baby will live”, “This baby will live”. Just a few days later I received a joyous phone call from my pregnant sister that was in the dream and she happily informed me that my aunt decided to keep her baby. What’s even more shocking is just a few days ago I received another phone call that not only was my aunt keeping the baby, but that she is actually giving birth to a girl. Just like my dream! I fell to my knees in sobs, completely overtaken with the joy of the Lord. This experience moved my spirit even more to petition heaven on behalf of the unborn. At that moment I BELIEVED that my prayers were not in vain!

What do you hope to accomplish through Bound4Life?

I hope to (through prayer and action) move people to care for the widows and the orphans that the bible speak of. Psalm 82:3-4 says “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” In modern day terms, care for the aborted ones, neglected children, hurt and battered women. Take action against injustice, not through violence and hostility, but through the love of Jesus Christ. We’re here to offer life and hope for pregnant women considering abortion, not condemnation. So it is my desire that the lives of  these broken hearted women souls are saved, and mind set free!

RECIPE: Fresh fruit, tofu & granola parfait

Fresh fruit, tofu & granola parfait
(serves two)

Hey Loves! This is what the hubby and I ate for dessert on Valentine's Day. It's my own, homemade recipe (as most of the things I cook are, lol), but we absolutely LOVED them! Give it a try and let me know what you think. God bless.

What you'll need:
6 Large, fresh strawberries
6 Large, fresh pineapple chunks
1 Two-pack Honey & Oats Nature Valley granola bar
1/4 Cup of Nasoya tofu
Bowl
Fork
Two small dessert cups

Directions:
Use a small mallet to grind granola bars into a loose, powdery form, but still leave a few small chunks.

Slice strawberries into thin slices, then place in bowl. Use the fork to smash the strawberries as much as you can until somewhat creamy with small strawberry chunks. Scoop strawberries into dessert cups. Set extra strawberries to the side to be used later. Then, scoop a layer of granola over the strawberries.

Next, mix pineapple chunks and tofu in blender until smooth. (Note: If you do not have a blender, you can mix the pineapples and strawberries in the bowl using a fork the same way you did the strawberries. But be sure to cut the pineapple chunks very thin). Scoop a thick layer of this mixture into each dessert cup.

Finally, add another layer of your strawberry blend over the pineapple mixture. Top with one final layer of granola. I like my top layer to have more chunky granola than loose, but it's up to you.

Let dessert cups in refrigerator while eating dinner, then serve chilled.

ENJOY!

Living in the -ing

I am one busy woman.

Like most young women in their twenties, I have been trained since I was in elementary school to do all I can prove I was worthy of respect and better than the rest. So the fact that on any given day I am faced with a to-do list jammed with more items than most people have in a week is no surprise. I am constantly on the go, and sometimes find myself running off of only 3 or four hours of sleep (not healthy), and I try to strive for a life free of imperfections (not Biblical).

Yep, sometimes I have my alone time w/God @ Starbucks :-)
Most of my life I was taught to live in the -ing. When I say living in the -ing, I mean I was made to believe that as long as I was making moves, I was on the road to success. What I didn't realize was that it is so easy to get caught up in the busy distractions of life that camouflage themselves as necessary assets to happiness, and by doing so I was missing out on countless moments where I could be growing closer to God.

If you haven't read the book Weird by Craig Groeschel, senior pastor of Life Church, I highly suggest that you do. While reading, I found myself being challenged over and over again to become "weird in a God way" in the way I worship. The chapters the stuck with me the most were the ones pertaining to how we spend our time. I often find myself saying that I simply do not have enough time. I say things like:
  • "I want to finish reading that book, but I don't have enough time."
  • "I really love hanging out with my grandmother, but I don't have enough time."
  • "I want to spend more time with my niece, but I don't have enough time."
  • "I want to wake up earlier so I can really dig into the Scriptures before I get my day started, but there just isn't enough time."
...and the list goes on.
Why do we allow ourselves to be lied to so easily by Satan? And on some of the simplest topics. The majority of the professing Christian world may not be diligent Bible scholars, but we know the basics. We know that God is the Creator of all (Genesis 1,2). We know He is eternal and infinite (Revelation 22:13). We know He is the only true God, He is all powerful, what He says will happen will do just that, and He is sovereign (Isaiah 46:9-11). But we let Satan convince us that He can't do something and minuscule as make sure we have enough time in a day. We let his lies convince us that it's okay to ignore precious moments with our families and pouring ourselves into God's word...because we have better things to do.

God is the Author of time! He planned it all and He has given us the exact amount of time we need to get everything done that He wants us to accomplish.

How dare we feel as though we can't stop moving long enough to sit and bask in the glory of His presence. How dare we worry if whether or not we will reach our goals if we don't spend every waking moment striving to be the best. We should not live our lives looking opportunities to sqeeze in time for God, but we should make Him the focus and foundation of all we do and then ask Him how He wants us to fulfill our other obligations with the time He has provided. When we go about it the other way around, not only are we idolizing our jobs, schoolwork, ministry commitments, etc., but we are telling God that our to-do list is more important than spending time with Him.

Let me say this, the best me I could ever be is the me I am when I am dedicating all of my time to my King, when I make LIVING for Him my primary -ing. When I spend my time learning about Him, dying to myself so I know Him more, and understanding that He is the most loving and caring Person in my life...well, it's beyond humbling.

So, the next time you find yourself caught up in the busyness of living a life that is nothing more than a conformity to what the world considers to be "normal"...slow down, breathe, find a quiet spot (and maybe even a nice cup of coffee or tea) and spend some time with God. He wants your time.

Desirable

Last week, I was on an ooVoo chat with my Thursday night Bible study group (shoutout to the women of "FaVa"!), and one of the members made a purely transparent statement as we exchanged prayer requests. She asked that we pray for God to increase her desire to live for Him wholeheartedly because she understood that it didn't matter how dedicated she was to Bible study if her heart and mind were not focused on abandoning the old her for a new Holy Spirit induced upgrade.

Wow!
Ok, so maybe I changed the wording a little, but that was her main point.

It's amazing how many times we belive that we can live a Christian life being half in and half out, partially in love with God and partially in love with the world, somewhat wanting to change and somewhat blissfully settling for medicrity. We complacently give God a piece of us, and then say He's abandoned us when we think He hasn't given us His all.

James 1:22-24 says,
"Do what God's teaching says; when you only listen and do nothing, you are fooling yourselves. Those who hear God's teaching and do nothing are like people who look at themselves in a mirror. They see their faces and then go away and quickly forget what they looked like (NCV)."
I'm not sure if I even understood the magnitude of that Scripture the first time I read it a few years ago. I lived so much of my life foregtting my own reflection, foregtting that I was made in the image of God. Completely satisfied with the portion of God I was getting at the result of me only giving Him a portion of me. I didn't really desire to know Him. If I did, I wouldn't have been simply listening to what my pastor was saying, and still doing something elese. I wouldn't have been reading Scriptures in text messages I got from family members, friends, and co-workers and just giving them a quick head-nod in agreeance before I closed my phone and texted whoever my current "boo-thang" was. (Yes, I said "boo-thang, lol). I wanted to reap all of the benefits that I knew God had stored up for those who followed Him, but I didn't want to make the sacrifices necessary to receive those blessings.

But I tell you now...God is so DESIRABLE! His love is like nothing I have every experienced. He is my everything. I am getting super-excited as I type right now just thinking about Him, and knowing that He's watching me right now. I am His daughter; He is my true Father...my King. Once I made the choice to go all in for Him, He increased my desire even more with every word I read. James 5 goes on to say in verse 25a, "But the truly happy people are those who carefully study God's perfect law that makes people free, and they continue to study it (NCV)." AMEN! The more I take the time to really pour myself into God's word, the more desireable a relationship with Him becomes. My eyes are opened to my shortcomings, and I am made even more aware that He is the only way I can be whole.

Plainly put, the simple fact that He desired me so much that He sent Jesus to die so I could one day spend eternity with Him is all I need to know to make Him be forever desireable in my heart.

New Year, Newlywed, New Beginning...New Blog!

I'm Baaaaaack!

I apologize for being gone for so long, but I am happy to say that Felicia's Daughter is now back up and running!

I took a year off while I completed grad school (which I did right before Christmas), and I am pleased to say that on May 12, 2012 I will walk across the stage at Liberty University and be presented with my M.A. in Executive Leadership - Christian Counseling! Whoo-hoo!

Even more exciting...I got married the same day I finshed classes! I was blessed to become the wife of the wonderful Shelton J. Flores, and I smile like a little school girl everytime I think about spending the rest of my life with him.

God has been so good to me, and I owe Him everything!

While I was completeing my master's I was introduced to some amazing people, and God poured out some almost unimginable blessings in my life. I want to make sure that I use this little piece of the Internet world to share the gifts He has given me with whoever He allows to see.

This will be a place for me to simply speak about my daily walk with Christ, and give whatever little nuggets of advice the Holy Spirit happens to lay on my heart. In no way do I consider myself to be an expert theologian or anything like that, but I am a woman who loves God and lives to serve Him. So, if my experiences can help someone else as they journey along this path, then I am more than happy (more like priveledged) to share.

Is My Black Beautiful?

Tiffany K. Daniels of ZionsDestiny.com

Growing up, I always secretly wanted to be darker. My mom always told me how beautiful she thought Black women of a darker complexion were, so I naturally wanted to look like them. Even though my mother always told me I was gorgeous and that she even wished she was my color sometimes, I still wanted to just be at least “Naomi Campbell” dark.

From my grandmother telling me not to stay out in the sun too long or I’d get “black,” to magazines and music videos casting light-skinned, long-haired beauties as the focal points of their imagery, I began to be socially brainwashed to believe that my mocha complexion would never be as attractive as my caramel colored friends.

None of these ideas are new, however. The stigma associated with Black women and their skin complexion goes back to slavery when lighter-toned slaves were allowed to work inside the home and darker-toned slaves were forced to work in the fields. Mulatto slaves were also often sought after by slave masters for sexual favors. After slavery was abolished, it was acceptable for white elitist to take a Black woman in as a permanent mistress. These mistresses were sometimes very well taken care of financially (by standards of that time) and often given a home and monthly living expenses by their “patrons,” making them the envy of many dark-skinned Black women and giving them a sense of superiority. This might all sound archaic, but women today are still struggling with the issue of wanting to look lighter. Even while I was doing research for this article, I found an article titled “How Black Women Can Lighten Their Skin”!

The My Black Is Beautiful Campaign was started by Proctor & Gamble Multicultural Brand Manager, Kisha Mitchell Williams, and Assistant Multicultural Brand Manager, Pamela Rhett, a couple of years ago in hopes of celebrating African American women of all complexions and shapes. The company has actively taken a stand against what has become known as “colorism” by showcasing the many different beautiful shades African American women embody.

Your Birthday Wish Could Save Millions

Well you guys, my birthday is coming up and this year, I want to do things a little differently!
All of my birthdays have always been about me. I always felt like my birthday was the most important day of the year next to Christmas and my mom’s birthday (hey, I can’t compete with the birth our our Lord and Savior and the most spectacular woman to ever walk on this earth, lol).

This year, I don’t want it to be about me so…I’m giving up my birthday.

I’m turning 24 years old, and instead of asking for gifts, I’m asking for $10, $24 (for my age) or more from everyone I know as well as my loyal BeautyGirlMag.com readers. But I’m not keeping a dime of it. Every penny will be used to help build freshwater wells for people in developing nations.

I’ve set my goal for $100 just because my birthday is coming up so soon, but my campaign will be open until December. I may even switch it over later and ask for donations instead of Christmas presents because I would love to raise the entire $5,000 needed to fully fund a well.

According to the charity: water web site, a billion people in the world are living without clean water – but how much are they really living? Millions contract deadly diseases from contaminated water. 45,000 people will die this week alone. The lucky ones won’t, but still walk hours each day to get dirty water to give to their families. In Africa alone, people spend 40 billion hours every year just walking for water. It is common for women and children to bear the burden of water collection, walking miles to the nearest source, which is unprotected and likely to make them sick.

My birthday wish this year is not for more gifts I don’t need; it’s to give clean and safe drinking water to some of the billions living without it. I want to make my birthday matter this year.

Never Too Late to Remember: How 9/11 Changed My Life

On September 11, 2001, the world seemed to stop turning as people watched in horror as what we soon learned were terrorist crashed planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. We continued to be amazed as we got word that a fourth plane had crashed into a field in the rural farmland near Shanksville, Penn. after passengers attempted to stop a hijacking that is believed to have been scheduled to crash into the White House.

Shock, anger, sadness and disbelief were the initial reactions as the death toll was reported. Over the next few days before finally capping off at approximately 3,000, reactions to the event varied. Some people felt the need to secure their homes; others wanted an immediate reaction from the government to secure the nation from another attack, but then high school freshman Shanta Westry of Mobile, Ala. saw it as the beginning as the next chapter of her life.

E5/CDT Shanta Westry, 24, joined the United Stated Army National Guard on Sept. 27, 2004, and just a couple of weeks after her graduation from John L. LeFlore High School of Communication & Arts, Westry left for Basic Training. As a member of the 690th Chemical Company, she was deployed in 2006 and served her country in Iraq for 18 months.

Now back in the States, Westry is attending school at the University of South Alabama while still maintaining her dedication to the Army.In honor of our servicemen and women who so dutifully serve our country, I decided to sit down and have a chat with Ms. Westry about what the nine-year anniversary of that tragic September morning means to her.

Beauty Break with Kari Dent

Recently, I was able to spend a full day with part time radio personality for WECC 89.3 FM “The Lighthouse” and inductive Bible study teacher Kari King Dent. A native of Orangeburg, SC, Dent currently resides in St. Marys, GA with her husband, Pastor Ian Dent of Camden Crossroads Community Church, and her daughter Amelia. She is also the creator of Precept Camden (http://PreceptCamden.com), an online personal Bible study resource center with an online class feature that has students worldwide!

In the aftermath of heavily participating in her son Seth’s wedding, Dent found time to travel to Mobile, Ala. and teach an eye-opening Contextual Principles in Inductive Study course at In Worship’s latest training event.

I was fortunate enough to steal a few moments with the Bible study “guru,” who also holds a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from Winthrop College (now Winthrop University), and pick her brain and have a little girl talk!

Q: What is your definition of beauty?
I love clothes, shoes, accessories, and makeup! And I believe that all of us should take what God gave us and make the most of it. However, I believe that you can have the outside looking beautiful, but if you don’t have a beautiful spirit inside, you are just an empty shell. Some of the most beautiful women I know don’t spend an excessive amount of time on their appearance, but they are so kind and loving and filled with the Spirit of God that they just exude this aura of beauty. That’s how I want to be. I want to do my best to look attractive, but people might be surprised at how little effort I actually put into it. (Or maybe they wouldn’t! *chuckles* ).

More Than Rubies

My beautiful mother, Felicia M. Spencer,
was called home by our Father on July
19, 2010 after a year and a half of trying to recover
from a diabetic coma and other illnesses.
I’m still a little in denial. Some people might think I’m crazy for saying that, but no matter how much reality fills the phrase, “she’s gone”, my mind still refuses to accept it as truth.

My mother, the woman who is responsible for everything I am today, is no longer someone I can call when I’ve had a bad day, text message in the morning just to wish her well, laugh with over Julia Roberts movies or chat with about my latest big idea to save the children of the world, and somehow, I’m supposed to find a way to compact her entire existence into the small chambers of my heart.

When the nursing home first called us in the middle of the night requesting that we come quickly, I didn’t even flinch. I figured she had a fever again and they needed to take her to the hospital or something. Even after watching the nurses and emergency response team avoid eye contact with me as I walked into the building, I still didn’t think anything was severely wrong. Maybe it was because we’d had so many scares over the last year that I figured this was just another medical overreaction, or maybe it was because (deep down) I was still just a little girl thinking her mother would live forever as she’d promised.

Ever since that night, time has been all out of whack. I’ve barely been able to breathe at times, let alone write new blogs. But I’m coming around. My mom always loved to read my latest articles, poems, short stories…whatever. She couldn’t wait for my book to come out, and she always appeared to be just as anxious to read my college research papers (even though I’m sure she wasn’t, lol).

DBC 2010

What's up?!!!!

I'm so sorry that I haven't been updated like I need to be, but my writing has been forced to take a backseat to my latest assignment from God; teaching.

I've been volunteering with Doulos Boot Camp at my church and, I must admit, it's taking up a great deal of my time. But I truly adore the work I am doing with the youth. The program is designed to help mold the participants into dedicated "bond servants" for Christ. It's so beautiful to see them transforming into a little army for God, as opposed to being conformed by the things of this world.

I am overseeing all of their special projects that involve writing. The most popular project of the moment is their blog, DoulosBlog2010.blogspot.com. It's AMAZING! If you've ever used your age as an excuse for why your relationship with God isn't what it should be, then you should definitely read their posts. These teenagers are making huge strides to devote their lives to God, and I feel so blessed to be a part of it.

So, be sure to check out the blog and PLEASE leave comments for the kids!

To Be Real: Speak

(NOTE: This is the second installment of a three-part series on ways to grow beautiful in God’s eyes by learning to be real about your relationship with Him)

You guys may not believe this, but I’ve been told that I can be a little blunt.

I know, I know. You’re probably thinking, “Not you, Ashley! We know you always carefully think of the perfect words to use in any given situation.” Well, that’s not always the case.

Direct, I am. Tactful, not so much. But hey…I’m working on it.

But it’s really not something I feel I should make apologies for just yet. I’m not the type to just throw words around carelessly and not consider how they might affect the person I’m directing them towards. As Christians, we are told that “fools will be punished for their proud words, but the words of the wise will protect them (Prov. 14:3 NCV)”. So, we should always think before we speak.

However, we should never compromise our loyalty to our great and magnificent God in an attempt to not offend anyone else.

A couple of days ago, a good friend of mine told me about a disagreement she and her former roommates had about the décor of their apartment. The extreme differences in their personalities created a diverse interior design atmosphere. Just as my friend is a devout soldier for Christ, one was a self-proclaimed atheist and the other didn’t appear to lean either way more than the other.

ASHLEY AMISS: "No Fishing"

Without question, our past greatly affects who we currently are and where we are trying to go on our natural and spiritual paths. I don’t know about you, but I know for a fact that if I had not made it through the struggles I have encountered in my 23 years of living that I would not be the woman I am today. The countless mistakes I’ve made in my life have all been learning experiences to me: the difference between love and hate, between friends and family, and between mediocre and extraordinary.Whether we used to be known as the Life of the Party (another tequila shot, anyone?), the Aimless Wanderer (just how many majors have you had since you’ve been in college?), or the Wild Child (alright! street racing time!) it’s never too late to change.

But change is not always so easily accepted by those who knew us when we were still trying to find our place in life.

Recently, a spiritual leader and new friend of mine said some of us need to get shirts with a big “NO FISHING” sign on the front to warn people that fishing for the old version of our new selves is pointless. After my burst of approving, yet very unlady-like laughter (hey, it was funny). I began to ponder even more on his statement. For those of you who may have moved away from home, how often do you find your family members bringing up the things you did when you were headed ‘on the road to nowhere’ without even attempting to mention how you finally got your “Productive Path GPS” working properly?

Some of us are still in the city in which we were raised, and have to deal with the occasional run-in with old acquaintances who refuse to accept that you are steadily growing into the man or woman God has intended for you to be. They find your longer skirts unappealing, can’t believe your blouse it buttoned almost all the way to the top and as soon as you walk away, they start sending mass text messages about how fake you have become.

"Lupus & Healthy, Summer Skin"

In honor of Lupus Awareness Month, I’ve decided to provide our beautiful readers who are living with Lupus with a few tips on how to enjoy the summer sun while being mindful of their delicate skin. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body. Autoimmune basically means an individual’s immune system cannot tell the difference between foreign invaders of their body and its healthy tissues; therefore, it creates auto-antibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. A symptom of Lupus is extreme, skin sensitivity to light. This can result in the appearance of rashes or skin lesions. These markings can be subtle or quite noticeable but should always be taken care of properly. With summer right around the corner, the lure of teeny bikinis and relaxing afternoons at the park may affect your better judgment.

- Try your best to reduce your skin’s exposure to direct sunlight. I know this may
sound like a hard task for summer, but the long term effects could be dangerous to
your skin and overall health. Also, be aware of some forms of artificial light.
Fluorescent and halogen bulbs produce UV light that can be very harsh on the skin
of people with any form of Lupus.

- WEAR SUNSCREEN! As someone living with Lupus, you should already know that too
much exposure to the sun is a big no-no. Wearing sunscreen year-round should
already be part of your daily skin care routine, but consider increasing the SPF
level you usually use in the upcoming summer months. One easy way to do this is by
using a moisturizer with a higher than usual SPF. Some say anything over SPF 15 is
good, but I’ve heard great things about Health Defense Daily Moisturizer SPF 50 –
Sensitive, which protects against UVA and UVB rays (as all of your moisturizers
should). Plus, it only cost about $14 at your local drug store.

ASHLEY AMISS: "To Forgive Is Divine"

Coming in a close second to “I’m sorry”, the words “I forgive you” may be the most difficult three-word combination for any human to utter. No, let me rephrase that. They may be the most difficult to utter honestly.

I don’t normally go around quoting Alexander Pope, but he hit the nail right on the head when wrote “to err is human, to forgive is divine.”

Now don’t get me wrong, I haven’t always had such a forgiving heart. I could have been labeled as a “Master Grudge-Holder” not so long ago. Betrayal was not something I took lightly, and I figured one act of dishonesty or maltreatment was enough for me to completely dismiss a person from my life. No looking back. No second chances. I even remember times when someone would challenge one of my unwavering grudges with a comment like: God forgives us all of time, why can’t you?” Then, I would slyly reply, “In what world do you think I am on the same level as God?!”

As you can tell, I was clearly delusional.

Why is it that we give so much power to those who have wronged us? When we hold on to grudges, not only does it drain us spiritually, it often doesn’t even make the person we are holding the grudge against break a sweat. Without their knowledge, we unnecessarily hand over our day-to-day emotional state to someone who is probably still going about their carefree lives.

About a month ago, a female friend of mine (who is actually more like a sister than a friend) and I exchanged rather unflattering words after we let rumors interfere with our relationship. As most of us do when engaging in arguments, she threw a few verbal punches that were extremely below the belt. A couple of weeks went by before we looked each other in the eyes, let alone spoke to one another.

"Show You KARE"

“Nothing in life comes easily.”

This is one life lesson that beauty industry bombshell Keisha Bogan Trammell knows all too well. Coming from a troubled background, Trammell has fought poverty, discrimination and social status stereotypes to build her own beauty empire. Owner and master stylist at Beautiful Klue Salon in Smyrna, Ga., she has stayed true to her personal motto, “Image is Everything…Be the Example.”

In Nov. of 2005, Trammell found herself displaced from her home in New Orleans, LA and going into pre-term labor in Starkville, MS. Since the hospital in Starkville was unable to properly care for her delicate situation, she was forced to travel to Jackson with no connections for shelter, money or food. While watching her daughter fight for her place in this world on Christmas Eve, a room at a local Ronald McDonald House became available and Trammell was able to remain close to the hospital.

In Oct. of 2009, Trammell officially launched the KARE Foundation and the first Project KARE event was held at the same Ronald McDonald House that helped her so many years ago. KARE Foundation volunteers assisted Trammell and her family as they delivered “KARE packages” to residents containing basic toiletries, as well as a special token of beauty.

Today, Keisha Bogan Trammell is still making great strides with her foundation. In March of 2010, she delivered a motivational speech at the University of South Alabama as part of the foundation’s current speaking tour. Afterward, I was lucky enough to steal a few moments of her time and pick the brain of this ultimate beauty girl!

ASHLEY AMISS: "To Be Real...Laugh"

NOTE: This is the first of a three-part series on ways to grow in beautiful in God’s eyes by learning to be real about your relationship with Him.)

I laughed out loud the other day.

Yep, I was standing near my kitchen table and let out a sharp, humorous roar in response to something funny on the TV (I think it was Suite Life on Deck or something like that). Now, this may not sound like such a big deal, but allow me to explain. A little over a month ago, I sat at that very table and let out a similar screech of emotion.

The difference: the sound was filled with despair.

After returning from an extremely exciting Bible study session, I found myself on a spiritual high and figured I’d call an old friend. He and I hadn’t been on the best of terms, but I wanted to share some of my new revelations about my relationship with God with him since he’d seemed so down lately. Unfortunately, I underestimated how much power someone else’s sorrow can have over my own emotional state.

"A Chat With Delvyn Crawford"

Growing up in an environment where my biological father was practically nonexistent, I developed many negative opinions about men. Though he was replaced by an awesome step-father, I still had a tendency to categorize all men as being undependable or emotionless. However, I have had the chance to come in contact with several amazing men through traveling as a writer, and by simply volunteering in my community.

A few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to come the across founder and CEO of Gutter Enterprises, Delvyn Crawford. Since starting the company in May of 2008, Crawford has been able to provide the Southeastern area of Wisconsin with inspirational entertainment through music, documentaries, and community events. I recently had the opportunity to have a chat with Delvyn Crawford about Gutter Enterprises and get his thoughts on what “all around true beauty” really is.
